Aline Bastin Photography Contest:
2025 edition
Trains connect places but also people; as such, they have always been a fascinating and inspiring topic for artists. The objective of this contest is to stimulate creativity and to spread a sustainable and safe image of the railways in Europe, showing them as an integral part to a cleaner, smarter and more connected transport system.
The contest is held on an annual basis and seeks to find the 3 best pictures highlighting the modern, environmentally-friendly and human dimensions of railways.
The contest features 3 award categories:
- Best picture in the passenger services category
- Best picture in the freight services category
- Best picture in the rail infrastructure category
Winners each receive a 200 euros prize.
Taking place since 2013, the European Railway Photography Contest was renamed in 2016 in memory of our tragically departed colleague and friend Aline Bastin.
'Train in the Saalach Valley' by Bernd Magiera. Bernd has been photographing locomotives, trains, and railway infrastructure since 1975. This photo was taken during a tour through Franconia, Chiemgau, Austria and Slovenia. The chosen spot is near Saalfelden on a misty morning.
'Climbing on board' by Bridget Roche. Bridget, a qualified locomotive driver with training in port operations, captures a moment as a locomotive is prepared for service beneath the gantry cranes of Waterford Port in Ireland. For her, the image reflects teamwork, safety and the human presence at the heart of modern freight operations.
'Welcome to the Mons station' by Xavier Marquis. The image highlights the new railway station in Mons, Belgium. A photography enthusiast for the past 17 years, Xavier visited Mons station at 3 a.m., just before it officially opened to passengers.
