Reply to public consultation - Revision of the Energy Taxation Directive

In the context of the European Green Deal, the European Commission launched on 23 July 2020 a public consultation on the revision of the Energy Taxation Directive (ETD). 

The ETD must become EU Green Deal compliant. It is an important policy tool to encourage consumers and businesses to choose more environmentally transport modes such as railways and could also play a role in Europe’s economic recovery after COVID-19. 

CER expects the revision of the ETD to: 

• End the mandatory energy tax exemptions for aviation and maritime shipping (ETD art. 14)
• Keep the optional exemption for cleaner transport like rail, i.e. make it obligatory (ETD art. 15)
