EU citizens express strong opposition to the deployment of European Modular Systems on roads

Rail sector highlights concerns regarding revision of the Weights & Dimensions Directive

The European rail sector has raised concerns about the current state of the revision of the Weights and Dimensions Directive in a joint sector statement endorsed by numerous national organisations and associations, particularly from the rail freight community. The statement aims to provide a clear and coordinated message to EU policymakers.

The Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER) underlines that the revision should support the transition to zero-emission road vehicles in a way that remains fully compatible with Europe’s climate objectives, interoperability requirements and modal-shift ambitions.

CER remains particularly concerned about provisions that could enable the wider deployment of longer and heavier vehicles without sufficient safeguards. Such measures risk undermining rail freight competitiveness, weakening intermodal and combined transport, increasing pressure on road infrastructure, and shifting additional costs onto public budgets.

CER also reiterates its concerns about the decoupling of the revision of the Weights & Dimensions Directive from the revision of the Combined Transport Directive. Both initiatives were originally intended to form part of the same policy package in order to promote synergies between them and optimise the overall transport system through more efficient modal integration.

CER will continue working constructively with EU institutions and sector partners to ensure that the final legislation supports an efficient, resilient and truly multimodal European freight system.
