Alternative Propulsion Technologies in the European Railway Sector

Accounting for less than 0.5% of EU transport greenhouse gas emissions, rail is already a frontrunner in Europe’s decarbonisation.

While this makes the rail sector a key enabler of the EU’s climate objectives, it also highlights a challenge: to go even further, the sector must address the remaining sources of emissions.

This position paper aims to showcase the readiness of the sector to implement sustainable alternatives to diesel-powered trains and to advocate for a European strategy supporting their deployment.
