In this CER Essay, Yoshio Ishida, Vice-Chairman of JR East, describes the success story of the privatisation of Japan’s national railways.

The privatisation of JR East is an encouraging example of how to transform a heavily subsidised, loss-making company into a profitable modern service provider, transporting more passengers than ever. For Europeans, there are certainly lessons to be learned from the Japanese case – both for railways and for politicians.
