Resolution of railway companies operating on 1520/1524 mm system

Wednesday, 30 May 2007

On 30 May, the Baltic CEOs met at the invitation of their Finnish colleague Henri Kuitunen, to sign a common resolution on the interoperability considerations relating to the conformity requirement of rolling stock subsystem with the standards of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), major business partners for these railways.

In a joint resolution, the CEOs of CER member companies from Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Lithuania reminded the relevant EU authorities that the standardization of technical harmonisation currently under way within the EU shall not compromise the business needs of Finish and Baltic railway activities. As a major part of European rail traffic in these states is based on rolling stock operated on CIS technical standards, such considerations must not be overlooked by the relevant bodies – notably the ERA working groups and the European Commission.

The signatories also called on the ERA to officially launch a 1520/1524 mm gauge Working Group and involve the railway representative bodies in their work.

Whilst of course acknowledging the necessity for conformity with Community Law, the resolution points at the importance to keep a framework ensuring the opportunity for business and competitive growth of all stake holders.

The resolution is available below in pdf format.
