EURELECTRIC and CER joint future-oriented vision for sustainable and competitive surface transport for Europe


The Union of the Electricity Industry (EURELECTRIC) and the Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER) have adopted a joint future-oriented vision for sustainable and competitive surface transport for Europe. It is a vision that supports a modal shift to rail, the deployment of electric road vehicles, and the expansion of electrified public transport services in urban areas.

The Vilnius Declaration - Sustainable mobility for a sustainable society


The European Commission has clearly stated its ambitious vision to increase mobility while reducing emissions by 2050 in its 2011 Transport White Paper. Vice President Siim Kallas, responsible for transport said, “Transport 2050 is a roadmap for a competitive transport sector that increases mobility and cuts emissions. We can and we must do both. […] Competitive transport systems are vital for Europe’s ability to compete in the world, for economic growth, job creation and for peoples’ everyday quality of life.”

CER signs the European Road Safety Charter

Each year around 600 people die in accidents involving road vehicles and pedestrians colliding with trains at level crossings. Whilst this currently represents around 2% of road deaths in Europe with big differences between European countries, at the same time they account for around 30% of all rail accidents. It is a known fact that some 95% of these fatalities are caused by user behaviour and particularly the road drivers’ behaviour and pedestrians.  However, society still regards these fatal accidents as a rail problem.

The Concept of Employability in the Railway Sector

During the years 2000/2001 and 2005/2006 Workign Group II of the European Social Dialogue Committee for the railway sector examined in two study projects the question of whether the concept of employability is a suitable and useful concept for the railway sector.
