Dear Visitor,
This week started with the publication of the long anticipated White Paper on transport by the European Commission. The White Paper is definitely going into the right direction. Most notably, CER together with other rail related associations fully supports the vision of a competitive and resource-efficient transport system outlined in the document, in particular the targets for the decarbonisation of the transport sector and the establishment of a single European transport area. We now call upon European decision makers to introduce the right measures and instruments in order to achieve these goals. Read complete editorial |

Rail freight grows by more than 5% in 2010 in further sign of recovery in rail markets
Recent CER data shows that for the full year 2010 compared to 2009, rail freight increased by 5.4% in Western Europe and by more than 7% in Eastern Europe. Moreover, The rail passenger sector in Western Europe also grew by nearly 2% in 2010 compared to 2009, although contracted by 4.5% in Eastern Europe. Read the complete article
European rail sector welcomes Commission’s vision for the future of transport and calls for effective implementation
CER, EIM and UNIFE welcome the publication on 28 March of the long anticipated Transport White Paper setting out the EU transport policy for the next ten years, including perspectives up to 2050. The European rail sector fully supports the vision of a competitive and resource-efficient transport system outlined in the document, in particular the targets for the decarbonisation of the transport sector and the establishment of a single European transport area. However, the associations warn that the focus must now be on how to implement the proposed measures if this vision is to become a reality in the next decade. Read the complete article

Enhancing mobility with ticketing, yes, but, above all, with a pan-European network
Since the volcanic ash cloud crisis, EU politicians have raised expectations in terms of ticketing, and crisis management. CER has put these items high on its own agenda. However, ticketing and crisis management alone will not make rail a reliable alternative to other transport modes. What is primarily needed is the completion of a pan-European high speed network. EU grants EUR 170 million to infrastructure projects across Europe
CER notes that on 21 February, the European Commission announced the projects selected to receive a total of EUR 170 million of trans-European transport network (TEN-T) funds to build and upgrade transport infrastructure across the European Union. Read the complete article
