Since the volcanic ash cloud crisis of last April, a number of high level representatives of the European Union, including Vice President of the European Commission and Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas, have expressed an interest in intramodal and intermodal “through-ticketing” for passengers. But what is the understanding of “through ticketing” in the context of open markets, multimodal journeys, and international trips? What are railways doing to make it happen? And what can be the limits to the “through ticketing” offer and why?
