The European Union’s transport policy stands at a crossroad. Economic growth and prosperity within the European single market requires an efficient pan-European transport system that can deliver the right services to the Union’s passengers and freight operators. In parallel, the transport sector is responsible for almost a fifth of the Union’s greenhouse gas emissions, and is placing increasing pressure on the EU’s commitment to a low-carbon future. Structural change is therefore essential for Europe’s transport system to be able to respond to future demands while progressively reducing its total emissions. On 12 October, the Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER) is organising a symposium together with the Belgian Presidency about the crucial role that railways can play in the decarbonisation of transport. Mr Etienne Schouppe, Belgian State Secretary for Mobility, and Belgian MEPs Saïd El Khadraoui and Mathieu Grosch will contribute their high-level expertise alongside senior officials from the European Commission and relevant Commissioner Cabinets, as well as experts from the independent sector and academia.
