The adequate financing of railways for infrastructure and public services - as required by EU legislation – is not a European reality. During the last decade this has significantly contributed to a deterioration of the competitive situation of rail vis-à-vis road in many countries. Against this background we would like to discuss what can be done to ensure that financial obligations of member states as they exist in current EU legislation are adequately met.

A solid ‘financial architecture’ of the railway system, together with market opening, competition, increasing efficiency and customer orientation: this is the way forward to a successful contribution of rail to a competitive EU transport system.

After the conference, the speakers will be available for individual interviews. Should you be interested in having an interview with any of the above listed speakers or Mr Ludewig, please let us know as soon as possible. For a possible interview with Mr. Ruete, please contact his office directly.
