Rail is a highly efficient form of transport for both passenger and freight which has a significant environmental benefit. Rail only accounts for 1.7% of total energy consumption in transport, though it carries 17.4% of inland freight, and 7.6% of passengers in the EU28.

On Wednesday 10 October 2018, CER and ÖBB will host a roundtable discussing Rail – Europe’s climate solution? This event will give attendees a unique opportunity to gain knowledge about the impact of rail business on climate and energy targets. The panel will address the policy areas that could promote modal shift in the upcoming years, boosting the competitiveness of the rail sector while leveraging synergies with other modes.

Organised in cooperation with the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the EU, this Brussels event will feature a keynote speech from the Austrian Presidency followed by a high-level panel debate between European Commission, European Parliament and rail sector representatives.
